THE Wollongong Hawks' search for a new CEO is over, with former Canberra Cannons boss Terry Ryan officially taking the reins yesterday.

Ryan was a founding member of the Cannons and was the club's general manager until 1986.

He also spent time in the front office with Gold Coast and Brisbane and most recently has been running a major sports centre at a Brisbane private school.

Ryan has been appointed to fill the chief executive's chair which was unexpectedly vacated by Peter Rowe earlier this month.

He said he was committed to the job for the long haul.

"I've always had a soft spot for the Hawks and I'm looking forward to being part of the club," Ryan said.

"It might take a bit of settling down for the first month or two but the team's going well because they're such an unselfish group and hopefully we'll keep things cooking along."

Ryan will move to Wollongong within the next fortnight.

"There was a huge amount of interest in the job and the interviewing and selection process has been exhausting," Hawks chairman Kyle Page said.

"Terry will shore up the ship. He's had a lot of exposure within basketball and that was a major factor. From a basketball perspective it's excellent ... because he has a lot of experience."
