TWO historic cannons will be returned to Gregson Park, Hamilton, today after being restored.

The cannons, originally made in Yorkshire in 1840, were moved to the park in 1905 from Sydney's waterfront military base, Fort Macquarie.

Removed last year for restoration works, the cannon barrels have faired well since they were originally built, but the wood platforms were suffering, project manager Tony Ayling said.

Conservation works on the gun carriages and traversing platforms, preservation of the carriage fabric and new mounting were completed this month.

The cannons will be lifted into place by cranes today at 11am.

The park was named after Jesse Gregson, the superintendent of the Australian Agricultural Company.
