THE Burrell family thought exploring the Fort Scratchley tunnels was "awesome" but their favourite attraction at the historic military site was without a doubt the cannons.

The Newcastle East landmark opened to the public yesterday after a four-year closure and $10 million restoration.

The community had a sneak peak at the results in June during community celebrations to mark the transfer of ownership from the Federal Government to Newcastle City Council.

Lyall and Dianne Burrell took grandchildren Alahna, 13, Blake, 10 and Kyah, 5, for their first visit to the site yesterday.

"The kids love it," Mr Burrell said.
